Dr Gareth Drake - Clinical Psychologist & Supervisor

Why Therapy?

You may be struggling because of relationship, family or employment difficulties, early life events, a loss or traumatic change, persistent physical pain; or you may be feeling low, worried or angry and not know why. Some of the reasons people consider therapy include:

  • Depression or low mood
  • Anxiety or panic
  • Relationship or friendship difficulties
  • Persistent physical or medically unexplained symptoms
  • Distressing habits
  • Feeling a lack of purpose or meaning
  • Confusing or unusual experiences

About Me

I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, professionally registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I have worked with clients across the lifespan in a range of NHS and private sector settings. I also offer supervision, and educational and reflective spaces to a range of healthcare professionals.

What to Expect

In your first session, we have the chance to meet and get to know one another a little. I’ll ask you about your current situation and what led you to consider therapy. We can discuss various options, and you can decide whether or not you would like to continue. Sometimes people attend more than one consultation session before deciding upon whether they would like to begin therapy.

If we decide to continue into treatment, we will usually meet weekly and sessions will usually last 50 minutes.

I draw on a range of evidence-based therapy approaches in the work. These include Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Compassion-focussed therapy (CFT), Mindfulness practice, and Mentalisation-based therapy (MBT). The number of different therapy approaches can often feel quite dizzying and the evidence tends to change. I am particularly interested in finding a shared way of talking about distress with people who come for therapy, so that they might better understand their situation, thereby gaining some relief and hopefully a greater sense of meaning in their day to day lives.
